Charlestown Pupils Raise Funds for BABA

29th June 2017

Pupils at Charlestown School had a special visitor this week as BABA bear, the official mascot of The Cornwall Birth and Baby Appeal, came to their school to give some big bear high fives in recognition of their fundraising.

The school raised £358 through a non-uniform day and charity cake sale. Headteacher Mark Clutsom explained that the School Council had voted to support the appeal and were very keen to get behind the cause,

“We were delighted to be able to help because it is such an important cause and close to all of our hearts - the Neonatal team do such an amazing job.”

The money raised will go to The Cornwall Birth and Baby Appeal and the intention is for the funds to purchase Ipads to assist families in their ‘memory making.’ Mel Frost from the Neonatal team at Royal Cornwall Hospital expressed their sincere thanks to the school for supporting the appeal and explained the important role that ‘Memory Making’ has for the families in their care,

“The Ipads will allow us to record those very special moments for families to look back on. It could be the moment a baby first opens its eyes, the first grip of a finger or the first skin to skin cuddle when the baby is free of any tubes or respiratory support” she explained.

Natalie Parsons, also from the Neonatal team explained the importance of capturing these moments for families that might not be there at that particular time “Maybe the Dad is at work or the parents have had to go home for the night, we will be able to capture these special moments and update the family straight away by using special software.”

“It is great to see schools, like Charlestown, becoming involved in The Cornwall Birth and Baby Appeal. There is a good chance that they themselves were born at Royal Cornwall Hospital and any future brothers and sisters will benefit from the appeal with the improved facilities at the hospital” said Karen Murrish, Fundraising Manager for Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity.
